GROUP 5 – PROJECT IDEAS FOR CREATIVE EUROPE
- LEONARDO DA VINCI ON STAGE
In the historical period in which modern European theatre was born, particularly its most specific and original form, the opera, Leonardo da Vinci was a protagonist of the stage to which he applied his extraordinary talents as an artist, a machine builder, and as a scientist and technician, a set designer. His commitment is remembered for the sets he built for parties, celebrations and games, especially for the Milanese court, and the organic projects for the Danae by Baldassare Taccone from 1496 and, more importantly, for the’Orpheus by Angelo Poliziano, a milestone in the history of European theatre, from 1506-1507.
One line of address draws inspiration from this prerogative of Leonardo, less known than others but equally of great importance for the synthesis between his various fields of study and research, and concerns two specific projects.
Keyword: Opera. The first is related to his activity as an artist for the theatre.’ORPHEUS It is, as mentioned, a poetic text by Poliziano, who was active in Florence for a long time at the Medici court, while the homonymous musical opera from the early 17th century is by Claudio Monteverdi with a libretto by Alessandro Striggio. Both are reworkings of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice but are different versions. The project idea is to stage Poliziano's poem in a contemporary way, which is recited in polyphonic form by a quartet of reciters, accompanied by a background of original jazz or folk music performed by an international ensemble, made up of musicians from various European countries and beyond (such as the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio or the Multiethnic Orchestra of Arezzo or an original ensemble formed for the occasion after a specialization course open to music schools from all the territories involved). The concert is staged with a virtual scenography based on a video installation developed starting from Leonardo's projects for the’Orpheus by Poliziano, in particular on the “Foglio del Teatro” reconstructed by Carlo Pedretti and already published, also in the volume “In the Footsteps of Archimedes: A Journey through the Malatesta Library”"Carrocci, 2015," created for the staging of the show of the same name in the Nuti Hall, and based on various preparatory drawings prepared by Leonardo. Another possibility is to involve a prominent figure in the international music scene with Italian roots in the composition, coordinating the design of the musical work with them.
Keyword: In Itinere. The second concerns the life and work of Leonardo, presented through a very particular and heartfelt aspect of his personal history: the relationship with MOTHER. In recent years, various literary works on the subject have been published which have also allowed for the re-examination of the historical character of Caterina, perhaps her mother: we refer to the volume by Carlo Vecce Caterina's smile. Leonardo's mother. and by Franco Pollini In Search of the Lost Mother. The idea is to stage a recital for narrators and computer music, starring a prominent Italian theater actor, accompanied live by a composer/instrumentalist capable of interacting with the text. The script is the result of extensive training that, inspired by the historical and literary research indicated, will lead a group of young Europeans from the participating regions to first take a creative writing course and then collaborate on a theatrical text, in the form of a monologue (or a dialogue between two actors, if appropriate, including the Mother in addition to Leonardo). The script, thus produced in Italian, English, and French, will be printed in a booklet accompanied by introductory texts on the theme.
The recital will premiere in Cesena and can be performed in other cities. It may also include subtitling so that it can be understood anywhere in Europe.
Keyword: Theatrical words. This "theatrical" approach also includes a broader project, requiring a longer planning time. The idea is for a prose theatrical production that would present the Ways of Leonardo not only in member and participating cities but throughout Europe. Produced in multiple languages, it would be based on a text written by a European-renowned Italian playwright. The number of characters could be limited to four, in addition to Leonardo, played by a renowned Italian actor. The set could be virtual and free of complex constructions, for a streamlined production that could be easily exported. Its European dimension would be a true event for the world of theater, so limited to narrow national borders.

- Leonardo and Contemporary Art: “The 13 Witnesses”
in collaboration with the Nuova Fondazione Pedretti and other Italian and foreign museums
Keyword: contemporary witnesses. The 13 witnesses: is a contemporary art project on Carlo Pedretti's collection and the fascination with Leonardo in America and Europe.
Keyword: Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol in Malatestiana The Pedretti collection includes works by Andy Warhol. The idea is to exhibit a pair of Marilyns that offer a deeper understanding of the critic's relationship with contemporary art and the themes of copying and reproducibility. Of truth and falsehood in art. With reference to the Malatesta codices.
Keyword: Leonardo's books. Leonardo's books among the Malatestiana codices
This is a corpus of about thirty manuscripts that, although not "by Leonardo," can be assumed to have been consulted and studied by him during his stay in Cesena. The artistic value of these assets, housed within an architectural structure of exceptional importance, can be appreciated.
Keyword: codes and notebooks: Leonardo's codices and the notebooks of Ilario Fioravanti, a contemporary artist and architect from Cesena, who, like his supreme genius, used drawing to understand the nature and technique of superimposing sketches to gather impressions and documentation. His one hundred notebooks are "Leonardian" also because his vision is plastic not only when sculpting or planning architectural spaces, but also when drawing and painting. Like Leonardo, who had (almost) no contemporary students, yet finds in this distant Cesena artist an extraordinarily close hand and thought. The exhibition can be presented not only in Cesena, but at all other nodes of the Via Leonardo.

- LEONARDOGATE
Keyword: sharing. The project aims to connect nodes of the Leonardo network, artists from various countries, young people, and students in a sort of European "virtual square." Tools, equipment, and hardware may also be provided, but these will be managed by each partner outside the European call (corner, totem, giant screen, or other). What can European citizens share in an artistic way?
- Virtual ateliers, linked to digital performing arts;
- Production of podcasts or short films on video or animations, inspired by Leonardo's ideas or by his specific works and inventions: e.g. scientific observations, such as the flight of birds, or works of art such as the Mona Lisa on which many variations have been made, or technological inventions, such as hydraulic designs;
- A poetry exhibition (written and visual), expressed through digital performances, with texts in various languages written by poets from the participating territories, inspired by the figure and work of Leonardo. The results can be collected in a volume and distributed along the Viae.
- The environment and Leonardo: an imaginary reconstruction of places and landscapes, of the environment in its entirety, as if... Leonardo's guiding principle, aimed at the use of nature by man, but not at its exploitation and transformation, had been a winner rather than a loser, even forgotten. Leonardo observes and imitates, he does not subjugate and transform, as did the technological man of modernity.
"Leonardogate" Financing Hypothesis: Creative Europe
- THE STUDENTS AND LEONARDO
Keyword: young theatre people
School theater productions, with a common theme established each year, a different theme always drawn from Leonardo's thought and work, can then be presented on the stage of networked cities, at the crossroads of the Viae, even traveling over the years. Within a broader context, a sort of European School Theater Festival, with recognition and visibility for young theater artists.

- CONFERENCES
in collaboration with the Nuova Fondazione Pedretti and other Italian and foreign museums
Keyword: Travel to Romagna. Leonardo and Cesare Borgia in Cesena. A Journey through Romagna: Cities, Military Art, and Technology in the Early 16th Century: is a project conceived with the Polytechnic University of Turin and the Science Museum of Milan and focused on enhancing the book heritage of the Cesena library.
